MY THEOLOGY
I was raised in Humanist congregations and I still hold those teachings in my core. But as an adult I’ve experienced a few epiphanies. And many more days of just showing up and doing the dishes. Now I embrace reason and mystery and I am wary of certainty.
I am comfortable using theistic language and there are times when I pray to a Great Mother. However, for me “god” is an adjective or verb – a process of constant becoming. Nothing is fixed, nothing is unchanging, and we are co-creators in each moment.
I suppose this makes me a Process theologian, or perhaps I’m also a Pragmatist, or simply an apophatic mystic. But the most important thing to know about my theology is that it demands that I show up and give thanks.
MY SPIRITUAL PRACTICES
Movement is my favorite form of prayer and spiritual discipline. Most mornings I sweep my front porch as a form of meditation and as an exercise in pointless effort – there will always be more leaves tomorrow morning!
However, martial arts has been the spiritual discipline anchoring my life for over 30 years. Through my practice, I have come to understand theological concepts for which words are insufficient but that ground me over and over again, to the beauty of this world.
