Words for Worship

A Prayer

Let us take this moment to sit, and breathe, and be thankful.

Thankful for the quiet of a Sunday morning in this place we make holy by looking clearly at one another;

Thankful for the bubbling children who are pulling us forward;

Thankful for the sweet music that rises up and begs us to participate in beauty;

For all of these wonders, we give thanks.

And then we turn to the work of changing the world.

Changing the world is a lot of work.

It means wiping the mud off a table, sweeping dust away to create a clear place to work.

It means planning ahead so there will be cake after the kisses.

Changing the world is a lot of work.

It means changing the way we stand, the way we walk, the way we reach our hand out to another.

And, then we need to sit and breathe.

So that we might change the world again, let us sit and breathe here, together.

From the Address to a Couple on Their Wedding Day

There might be days when you wonder where do I end and the other begin?

For those times, you will need to remember how you each remain an individual, but together you will continually create the marriage.

A marriage is never static! Just as you will change and grow as individuals, so will the marriage. It will be recreated anew each time you smile, each time you kiss, each time you reach out in love.

Today you are demonstrating a faith that you will love one another, not just for who you are today, but who you may become.

Is there a finer form of love?
